New sod is laid on top of the soil, not rooted into it, so for the first couple of weeks it depends entirely on you for water. In Florida heat, a missed day can show up as brown seams by the weekend.
Week one: water every day, ideally in the early morning, enough to soak through the sod and wet the soil underneath. On very hot days, a short second watering in the early afternoon helps. Lift a corner to check: the soil below should be damp, not dry.
Weeks two and three: as roots start to grab, cut back to every other day with longer, deeper waterings. This pushes roots downward instead of keeping them at the surface.
Week four and beyond: move toward a normal schedule of two to three deep waterings a week, adjusting for rain and local watering restrictions. Hold off on the first mow until the sod is firmly rooted and you can't easily lift a corner, usually two to three weeks.
